Messaging case studies
Give A Booster Shot

Messagehall worked with a hospital foundation to develop an identity, logo and website for an employee contribution campaign.
Following approval of our 'Give a Booster Shot!' concept, we developed a unique, memorable logo and brand, accompanied with a print campaign reinforcing the stories of individual employees who contributed.
The website focuses on two components: getting donations and sharing the campaign with colleagues. A simple AJAX-based tool allows one-click email to co-workers, including a real-time alert if that co-worker has already given. Additionally, each donation can (optionally) be added to the campaign Twitter feed, presenting another opportunity for recognition of donors.
Within the first 48 hours of the campaign, the foundation received more in donations than had been spent on the development of the identity and website.

Las Vegas Travel Alert

In preparation for a possible labor dispute impacting Las Vegas hotels in 2007, a system was developed to warn travelers if their plans were likely to be disturbed.
A website and mailer were created, linked to a toll-free number for up-to-the-minute information for individuals without internet access.

Community Budget Working Group

The Community Budget Working Group has been convened in San Jose, California, for two consecutive years, with the goal of broadening public involvement in municipal decision-making.
To broaden that involvement, we developed an interactive microsite allowing people to submit recommendations for improving the city budget, and for other visitors to then vote on those ideas. Each new idea also populated the group's Twitter feed.
For meetings, we integrated a live video stream with live chat into the site, to allow even those unable to attend in person to participate from home. We also managed press outreach and message development.

Building a Better Airport

A campaign to increase security at the San Jose International Airport by reducing employee turnover, including by implementing a living wage, and increasing training standards.
Messagehall provided a microsite specific to the campaign, integration with the lead organization's Facebook identity, and message, framing and press strategy and outreach. The issue comes to a final vote in October 2008.

Accomplishments Map

For a campaign in support of a sitting City Councilmember, we determined that a visual representation of the official's accomplishments would be effective.
To that end, we developed both a print and an online version of a map of the district, with large icons indicating where the Councilmember had, for example, built a new fire station or improved a community center. The print piece was given to voters who were then encouraged to visit a simplified web site to learn more information and share the map with their friends and families. Voters could easily refer to the map to see what had been done in their area, while the overall impact of the map was to show a broad range of accomplishments.
On the day before the election was held, traffic to the website doubled. The Councilmember won the election.

Political mail

For years, clients have asked Messagehall to develop effective political mail targeted to specific universes of voters. And we've been happy to comply.
From assessing polling and establishing mail targets, to crafting a specific message and compelling design, to creating press-ready files - and all on tight deadlines - we've done it before.
Postcards, letters, doorhangers. To the right people, with the right message, with a professional look.
Tools employed: 4-color printing, target identification, message development.
Convergence Presentation

The culmination of a project aimed at overhauling the existing technological infrastructure for a major organization, this presentation was intended to articulate what that overhaul meant in practical terms, and why it was worth substantial investment.
The presentation offered accessible explanations for modern communications tools effectively to a technologically uninformed audience.
Tools employed: message development, presentations, systems design.
Message Experiment

In an attempt to identify an effective message to motivate respondents to action on a ballot measure, Messagehall helped a non-profit organization develop an experiment in which a group of voters was given two messages and their responses tracked.
Starting from values-based polling information, control and test groups were identified and each phoned. Subsequent mail drove traffic to a website designed for the experiment, providing a unique site code to each voter. A final call tested voters' response, and again drove traffic to the website.
The experiment, which took place over two weeks, gave insight into the effectiveness difference between two distinct messages and how best to engage voters on a somewhat esoteric issue.
Tools employed: 4-color printing, target identification, message development, web design, polling.
